HOPE

Hope is the confidence that, by integrating God’s redemptive acts in the past with trusting human responses in the present, the faithful will experience the fullness of God’s goodness both in the present and in the future.

Biblical faith rests on the trustworthiness of God to keep His promises. The biblical view of hope is thus significantly different from that found in ancient Greek philosophy. The Greeks recognized that human beings expressed hope by nature; however, this kind of hope reflects both good and bad experiences. The future was thus a projection of one’s own subjective possibilities (Bultmann, “ἐλπίς, elpis,” 2.517). Biblical hope avoids this subjectivity by being founded on something that provides a sufficient basis for confidence in its fulfillment: God and His redemptive acts as they culminate in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Hope

Introduction

In the sacred texts, hope is a recurring theme that embodies faith and trust in God's promises. It serves as a beacon in times of despair and a source of strength for believers.

Scriptural Foundations of Hope

  • Romans 15:13: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

  • Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

  • Psalm 39:7: "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you."

The Nature of Hope

Hope is not merely a wish; it is a confident expectation rooted in faith. It is the assurance that God is working all things for good, even in the midst of trials and tribulations.

Hope in Times of Trouble

In moments of distress, believers are encouraged to hold fast to hope.

  • Psalm 42:11: "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior
